A Greensboro
native, Leon went to Duke University on an athletic scholarship, played
football and went to the Rose Bowl in 1953, and graduated with a degree in
Economics. He joined the Army and married Sue Norris, a Yankee from
Massachusetts, in 1955. After various business ventures, he went to
work for Carling Brewing company in 1964 and was promoted faster than any
other employee in the history of the company.After a “downsizing” in
1973, he moved back to Greensboro in June of 1974 and went to work as
Comptroller for a Food Service Company.
After many years of struggle with alcohol, Leon entered Fellowship Hall in
1983 and started on his road of recovery. He became a steady and
aggressive member of AA, helping numerous other men overcome their addiction.
In 1985 Leon and Sue went to a spiritual retreat at Lake Junaluska, NC that
changed their lives. There they made a commitment to Christ and found
their purpose in life. They spent many years working with AA, Al-Anon and
Lay Witness Missions through the Methodist church.
In the Spring of 1993 Leon was diagnosed with congestive heart failure.
After a slow decline, Leon passed away on October 14th, 1995.
